A Front-Row Window To The Universe

ree

On Tuesday 4th November, cadets from 2286 (Coventry Arden) Squadron took their space training to the next level with an exclusive visit to the Marsh Observatory at the University of Warwick. The observatory is home to cutting-edge research and plays a key role in training the next generation of university astronomers, making it the perfect place for cadets to experience real science in action.

During the visit, cadets met working astrophysicists who shared insights into their research and demonstrated how telescopes are used for both teaching and frontline astronomical discovery. From exoplanets to exploding stars, the team showcased the wide range of science happening right here in our hometown.

As part of the experience, cadets also enjoyed a guided tour of the night sky inside the university’s inflatable planetarium, learning about the stories constellations tell and the planets of the Solar system. They then got hands-on with the Astro Table, an interactive touchscreen table that lets users build planetary systems, watch stars evolve, and explore the physics behind how celestial objects move.

The cadets all shared how brilliant the visit had been with Cadet Lillico saying the astro table was the best part, and could the squadron buy one! He was particularly good at creating black holes and destroying universes so maybe something to watch out for.

Visits like this strongly support the RAF Air Cadets’ new space training syllabus, giving cadets real-world context for everything they’re learning - whether that’s telescope tech, stellar evolution, or the future of UK space operations. With opportunities like these, 2286 Squadron continues to give its young people a front-row seat to the universe.

Our thanks to the volunteers for giving up their time to run this for us and to Dr Hawthorn for organising it.

For those interested in joining our Squadron, please reach out via email or book onto our January Open Evening through 22886aircadets.co.uk/event-list. We look forward to welcoming new faces to our community.
