First in Wales & West? Cadets lead the way in RAFAC’s most advanced space training yet
2286 (Coventry Arden) Squadron is once again aiming high—this time, into the stars! We’re proud to announce that not one, but two cohorts of cadets have successfully completed the RAFAC Silver Space Syllabus, making us one of the first Squadrons in Wales & West Region—and possibly the very first—to reach this exciting milestone.
The Silver Space Award builds on the Blue and Bronze levels with a deep dive into how the UK has used space—past, present, and future. Cadets explore the purpose and timing of manned and unmanned missions, discover how different types of space telescopes have shaped what we know about the universe, and even learn how to spot common space myths and factual inaccuracies. It’s an inspiring programme that blends science, strategy, and a healthy dose of curiosity.
Our first group of 15 cadets were proudly presented with their badges by Group Captain Roger Simon, Regional Commandant Wales & West, while a second group of 10 recently received theirs on Squadron.

Leading the way in delivering Silver Space is a stellar teaching duo: FS Ellen Seymour, a long-time STEM instructor, now joined by Dr Faith Hawthorn, an astrophysicist whose background includes work on planet discovery and space telescopes.
“It’s been brilliant to see how engaged and excited the cadets are,” said FS Seymour. “Having Dr Hawthorn on the team has added real depth and expertise to what we offer—we’re so lucky to have her onboard.”
Could we be the first Squadron in the Region to complete Silver Space? That’s still being confirmed—but either way, we’re incredibly proud of our cadets’ enthusiasm, teamwork, and cosmic curiosity.
