2286 Squadron’s Annual Adventure to RIAT

Updated: Jul 28

Earlier this summer, cadets from 2286 (Coventry Arden) Squadron headed down to Gloucestershire for one of the biggest events on the RAFAC calendar — the Royal International Air Tattoo. Hosted and organised by 2286 and joined by our friends at 8F (1st City of Coventry) Squadron, the day proved to be another memorable chapter in what has become a much-loved annual tradition.

As luck would have it, the weather was remarkably cooperative — the rain pausing just long enough for cadets to disembark and dive straight into the day’s action. By the time the heavens reopened, everyone was safely back on the coach, swapping stories and photos from a packed day of aviation and exploration.

From the roar of take-offs to the intricate displays overhead, RIAT delivered its usual spectacle. One of the biggest talking points was the Wedgetail, whose airborne demonstration drew particular excitement from cadets who had seen it grounded during last year’s summer camp at RAF Waddington. Seeing it in the sky — and in formation — sparked plenty of discussion about its cutting-edge technology and operational role.

Of course, the Red Arrows stole the show once again, drawing cheers with their precision flying and iconic manoeuvres — a reminder of the inspiration that brings so many young people into the world of aviation.

Beyond the aircraft, there was plenty to enjoy around the showground: static displays, STEM zones, recruitment tents, and (inevitably) souvenir stalls. One of the most determined missions of the day came from our Flight Sergeant, who proudly expanded her much-discussed collection of aviation-themed rubber ducks — returning with some excellent finds and a lot of smiles.

Throughout the day, cadets immersed themselves in the experience — learning, laughing, and building memories alongside friends old and new. For many, it was a first-time visit; for others, it was a return to something familiar. For all, it was a brilliant day out.

We’re proud to continue this tradition and grateful to the team at RIAT for once again delivering an outstanding event. Our thanks also go to the staff and volunteers who supported the trip — and to 8F Squadron for being fantastic company along the way.

Here’s to next year’s airshow adventure.
