This summer, 2286 (Coventry Arden) Squadron’s own Cadet Warrant Officer Thomas O’Connell had the incredible honour of representing the Royal Air Force Air Cadets on the prestigious International Air Cadet Exchange (IACE) to the United States of America. Over two weeks, Tom joined cadets from across the globe in a once-in-a-lifetime programme designed to build international friendships, explore aviation heritage, and experience first-hand the military, cultural, and historic highlights of the USA.

Beginning in Washington D.C., Tom toured Arlington National Cemetery, the Smithsonian museums, and the world-famous Udvar-Hazy National Air and Space Museum, home of the SR-71 Blackbird. He attended a moving US Marine Corps Sunset Parade before travelling on to Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, where cadets experienced military life up close.
Highlights included visiting the USS Wisconsin, stepping inside a Black Hawk helicopter, exploring Naval Air Station Oceana, and even flying in a KC-135 over Niagara Falls at 3,000 feet.
The itinerary also offered cultural stops, from Hershey Chocolate World and an amusement park day, to a visit to Hawk Mountain Civil Air Patrol Ranger School for rappelling. The exchange ended with a farewell dinner in Pennsylvania before cadets departed home, having made lasting friendships and unforgettable memories.

Tom’s Words:
“I was very privileged to attend the International Air Cadet Exchange to America. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done with cadets, and I will remember it as one of the best experiences of my life. From watching a Marine Corps Sunset Parade, to flying over Niagara Falls at 3,000 feet in a KC135, I was able to create so many memories that would’ve been impossible without the Exchange. I will always be thankful that I was selected for the program, and would strongly recommend that cadets apply next year.”
Everyone at 2286 (Coventry Arden) Squadron is immensely proud of Tom for representing both our Squadron and the RAF Air Cadets on the international stage. The International Air Cadet Exchange remains one of the highest honours a cadet can achieve, opening doors to unforgettable experiences and lifelong friendships.
